Nomination for Faith Activity for 2020 State Award

Spiritual Enrichment Group

For the past thirteen years, the Spiritual Enrichment Group (SEG) from Council 9499 has been meeting on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 8am-9:30am.  The group was formed after our Fourth Annual Council Lenten Retreat (we will be having our 17th Annual Council Lenten Retreat on March 20-21, 2020 at St. Francis Springs Prayer Center) when we determined that we needed to gather more often to discuss our faith journey and to learn more about God’s Word.  We have approximately thirty Knights who join us with about 10-15 coming on any given Saturday.  Some of the topics have included:

  • What Makes Us Catholic (our current topic – see below for details)
  • The Psalms: The Prayer of the Church
  • Acts of the Apostles
  • Book of Job
  • Paul’s Letter to the Romans
  • Paul’s Letter to the Philippians
  • Apologetics
  • “Living the Catholic Faith: Rediscovering the Basics” by Archbishop Charles Chaput
  • Evangelization program by Father Robert Barron
  • Letter of St. James
  • Gospel of St. John

We also have had numerous guest speakers including (in 2010) Father Fred Werth who discussed his very interesting faith journey from being a Protestant raising a family to being a Catholic Priest.  In 2013 Father Stephen Hoyt shared his faith journey with our group.  His time being a Franciscan Missionary in Africa was especially exciting for the group to hear.

In 2014, Dr. James Kimball shared the story of his mission trip to Macedonia.  He is a psychiatrist at Wake Forest Medical Center, and he toured several of the mental hospitals in Macedonia as well as many of the religious sites.  He plans to return again this year to Macedonia to continue his work.  His story was both eye opening and inspiring.

Since August of 2019 we have been studying “What Makes Us Catholic” (see below for details).  All of those participating talk about how meaningful it is to get together on a regular basis with their brother knights to discuss how to apply God’s Word to their daily lives.  As we share our individual struggles, we all become better Catholics and stronger men.  We look forward to meeting many years into the future!

WHAT MAKES US CATHOLIC

Next Spiritual Enrichment Group study begins August 24, 2019

Please join me for the next great study for our Spiritual Enrichment Group – What Makes Us Catholic.  We will be beginning on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 8am in the Cry/Training Room off the sanctuary.  We meet every second and fourth Saturday (Aug. 24, Sep. 14 and 28, Oct. 12 and 26, etc) from 8a-9:30a.  Normally we meet in the Curlin Center, but on August 24 we will meet in the Cry/Training Room.

If you have never joined us before or we have not seen you in a while, we welcome you to come and journey with us as we explore the wonders of our Catholic faith.  Bishop Robert Barron and Dr. Edward Sri will be leading our journey.  The sessions will be composed of videos along with questions and group discussion.   Topics include:

  • Who is Jesus?
  • The Ineffable Mystery of God
  • Why Do I Need the Church?
  • Mary and the Saints
  • Catholic Social Teaching
  • The Sacraments
  • The Last Things
